Why be perfect when you can be unique
Perfect.
I want you to take a few seconds to think about what that word means to you,
what it brings to your mind when you hear it.
The definition : to make something completely free from faults
or defects; and to make it as good as possible.
When I was a little girl I'd sometimes go out with a lopsided ponytail
and two different coloured socks without caring
how silly I looked.
I never minded how my pictures came out, in fact,
I'd sometimes try to look even more ballistic in them.
Then I grew up and suddenly I wanted to always look pretty,
my hair had to be done right,
my clothes never looked odd or outdated
and I made sure to delete any picture of myself that
I didn't like.
How we percieve perfection has been an issue for years,
a lot of us strive to be and look like the people we see on television
or magazines,
and many for that fact seem to not even understand the danger of doing so.
What danger?
The extinction of originality;
The danger of losing who you truly are.
We try tirelessly to achieve what we want,
we force our size 10 bodies into size 6 clothing and
endure uncomfortable shoes just to appear taller.
Spend our savings on gym memberships,
forcing ourselves to eat less,
all this just to fit into the socially acceptable norms.
But why?
Why do this?
There isn't a soul on this planet that is like you,
you are utterly unique,
Perfection is not something to be achieved;
it's nothing but a mere addiction, its never enough
its either too much or too less.
You're either too short or too tall,
too big or too small,
too dark or too pale - there is no in between.
Your flaws are not mistakes to be corrected but rather
are a features of you to be flaunted.
You do not need to be like anyone else to be called beautiful,
beauty does not have a singular definition,
it comes in all shapes and sizes.
Imperfection to me, is beautiful.
I just hope that one day I can look in the mirror with a lopsided ponytail,
clothes that dont match but are comfortable to me
and still be accepted
as socially beautiful.
